(*) Olive oil is certainly one of the oldest cosmetics known, having always been appreciated for its ability to promote healthy skin and its emollient properties.
Today’s dermatological studies confirm its precious virtues, attributing its effectiveness to its UNSAPONIFIABLE parts (components which cannot be converted into soap).
From a chemical point of view, the primary content of the unsaponifiables of olive oil (Olea Europeae Oil Unsaponifiables) is SQUALENE**, one of the main constituents of human sebum. In fact, in technical/cosmetic jargon, the unsaponifiables in olive oil are also called “vegetable squalene”.
**SQUALENE: an organic substance widely distributed in nature in both the plant and animal world. Originally extracted from the liver of sharks which is particularly rich in it and to which it owes its name.
Thanks to its strong affinity with skin sebum, olive oil unsaponifiable has excellent emollient and sebum-replenishing properties. It contributes to the maintenance of the hydro-lipid film that covers the epidermis, exerting a hydrating action (preventing the water contained in the skin layers from evaporating) and a protective action, protecting the skin from the aggression of external agents.
In leave-on cosmetics, the unsaponifiable is quickly and easily absorbed without leaving the skin greasy, (unlike olive oil) thus making its use comfortable and above all more effective than the original oil from which it is extracted.
In soaps and detergents, it reduces their ability to remove oils without inhibiting their effectiveness and lather, making them particularly delicate and suitable for sensitive skin.
The same characteristics are also found when used in shampoos and hair conditioners.
In practice, the unsaponifiables of olive oil can be defined as a precious functional active ingredient, which concentrates all the dermocosmetic benefits of the oil of origin from which it is extracted, performing an important role in the cosmetic product.
